Denis Leary Does It Again

What does he do? He puts his foot BACK into his mouth. See, a couple of months ago, an excerpt of his book came out. One he apparently thought was funny. It stated:

"There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why their dumb-ass kids can't compete academically, so they throw money into the happy laps of shrinks . . . to get back diagnoses that help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons. I don't give a [bleep] what these crackerjack whack jobs tell you - yer kid is NOT autistic. He's just stupid. Or lazy. Or both."

Its probably pretty clear that I was pissed, especially since Michael Savage hasn't bothered to call me yet about the invitation to come visit Gameboy.

Since my kid is a moron, stupid and lazy, perhaps I should invite both men to spend those two weeks raising my son, since I'm obviously not up for the task.

Today, Amalah tells of Denis' comments on the Daily show last week in her post. It seems Denis is trotting out the 'my friends have a child with autism' to justify the fact that he is the moron. If you care to see the episode in question, it's episode 150.

Apparently, Denis meant his comments about Autism about MEN who self diagnose themselves to explain away why they're failures. Did that paragraph above sound like that at ALL? It sounded to me like Denis was calling Gameboy an idiot. A kid with an IQ in the genius range. The kid who got up and gave a 45 minute presentation on Volcanoes to his Scout pack completely off the cuff, because his leader asked if he could share his knowledge about them for their unit on Geology. The kid who correctly spells cytoblastecine (and I know I mangled it), and can tell you what it means-because his 5th grade teacher had to use a college biology text to challenge him academically.

Please tell me how that excerpt got out, berating parents of kids on the spectrum when you really meant it as a dig at adult men with a need to explain their faults? I mean, you wrote it, your agent must have looked it over, it got edited, you got a copy to review and then it probably got edited again. So, that paragraph was looked at a minimum of FIVE times that I can tell and no one ever questioned that you're going after autistic kids, when you really meant something entirely different?

Sorry, Denis. The 'moron', 'idiot' and 'dumb ass' is the one looking back at you in the mirror each morning. The guy who seems to think that he mend fences with those in the autism community not by removing the portion that isn't funny, but by saying 'I have friends with kids on the spectrum and I didn't mean it to attack them."

Nice try.

I am constantly amazed at the garbage some people shovel out for $$$.

I haven't read the book yet, but in a recent interview on the O&A show, Leary was very clear about his position concerning Autism and Asbergers. His comments were directed toward the parents that were using the diagnosis as an excuse for their lack of parenting. He also mentioned that excerpts were sent to "Autism Speaks" and they understood his comments. I think Savage sucks, but I am a fan of Leary and a much bigger fan of Gameboy and his family.

SB, I think this was a classic case of engage mouth before engaging brain.

Big Joe, that chapter probably could have used some revisions, don't you think?

Saffa, I've been here! 23 days until the end! Though I don't think I'll be able to just stop the everyday thing.
