The Tin Man

Sci Fi channel has a retelling of "The Wizard of Oz" as a miniseries. It began tonight. The promos for it have been calling me for the past few days.

My childhood was ripe with the annual viewing of Oz, as my next older sister made sure we did NOT miss it. There would even be popcorn for most viewings of it. In high school, the brand new drama teacher decided that it would be our spring musical. Yep, that's the way to ensure tenure-not!

Anyway, the commercials looked promising. A slew of familiar faces and a healthy dose of darkness. The big draw for me was that Richard Dreyfuss would be in it. Some searching found that he'd be the Mystic Man (I guessed that meant he was this version's Wizard) The bad witch would be a face I'd recognized from my guilty pleasure of the early 90's, 90210.

Part one was pretty good. It's always interesting to watch a fresh telling of a familiar tale. You know what's coming, but what it this version's interpretation? "The Tin Man" of the title is what police of OZ (or Outer Zone) are called. He literally is encased in tin when you first meet him, though.

It was good enough that I'll tune back in tomorrow night. Fortunately, we'll be home from scouts before it starts. Tuesday does presents a problem-I work until 10pm and then I'm back to work at 8am. This calls for watching the 11pm showing and getting little sleep. Something tells me it will be worth the sleep deprivation.

(In work news, this is a far busier early shopping week than I have experienced in many years. Interesting)

OK, woman! We need to get you a DVR! No, I don't have one yet, but I hear they're fabulous for just the quandry you are experiencing with "Tin Man"!

I was ambivalent, but I watched Part 1 last night...and was pleasantly surprised. I turned it off a little over halfway through because I was getting tired (up early yesterday), but since Skiffy's showing parts 1 and 2 back-to-back tonight, I knew I wouldn't miss anything.

Now you KNOW I don't watch enough tv to justify having a DVR. The menfolk would fill that stupid hard drive with their stuff, leaving no room for my occasional taping need.

We ended up going out for dinner and now I'm waiting for the 11 repeat. Call me weird, I didn't want to begin a 1/2 hour in!

Ok. I knew the face was familiar, but I couldn't place it. So, who was it? Or have I just lost all thinking ability now that the third child is a year old?

Azkedillia is Kathleen Robertson, who played Clare, the dean's daughter on 90210. She was involved with David, who still pined for Donna. (and you are getting chills that I can tell you that much about 90210, aren't you?)

Zooey Deschanel (DG) was in the Hitch Hiker's Guide put out by Disney a few years back-that I still haven't seen. Love her huge eyes.

The Pimp reminded me of Miguel Ferrer's Lloyd Henreid in "The Stand" and this version's take on the munchkins reminded me of the one guy who was all the Ooompa Loompas in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Don't worry, you'll get your brain back before they all leave for college!

Dang, I wanted to watch that too - mostly becuase of Richard Dreyfus - drool... but it's just my fascination with all things Wizard of OZ. Usually I'm disappointed...

It was an interesting take on it. Part two started over again at 1am and I started watching it again!

I figured who played Azkedillia after I sent the comment/question. So far, my take on the mini series is just okay. I'm waiting for tonight's conclusion.
