But is It A Theft Deterrent?

Seen tonight outside a supermarket: Can you imagine the APB? "All officers are asked to be on the lookout for a white SUV, Florida license tag 'stolen.' It was stolen from the Sweetbay parking lot." Yeah, that would be interesting!

Say What?

Lately, it seems that I've had things I needed to do or fulfill and strangely, something entirely different happens. Two examples- The first: I applied to participate in a Foodie Blogger Web Ring last fall. At the time, I was turned down, because my content wasn't 50% food. It still isn't, but it's more than it had been when they turned me down. I understand the criteria, so I wasn't too upset about it. Then, in the past week, I've received three MEMBER emails from this particular web ring. One stating that they've got a waiting list of applicants, with a tone that implied that it was going to those already within the ranks. Hello, guys? I didn't make your ranks, and if I somehow slipped through-YOU DIDN'T TELL ME! If you had, I probably would have made an effort to post more food related stuff! Still confused on that one! The second: In order to register for classes at USF, all incoming students must complete orientation either online or at th...

Odds and Ends

It's been a busy couple of days. The upshot of yesterday's psychiatrist appointment is that Gameboy is NOT Bipolar, but we can't really rule it out. We saw our doctor's supervisor since she was out sick. The thought is that he's having some hormonal changes that are making his current doses wonky (gee, wasn't I worrying about this last year?) and we debated increasing his Abilify or Fluvoximine. I went with the Abilify, because it generally has quicker results. Additionally, Gameboy has been on the other medication since he was five-I suspect we'll get less results out of it. We should see results in a week, at most two. If this doesn't work, we increase the Fluvoximine instead. Too bad I had to send him to school today. His main teacher called me at 11:30 to come get him-while I was a half hour away. Um, No, I am NOT rewarding him for running out of the classroom. He isn't screaming and disrupting dozens of students. (It sometimes feel like...

The Dichotomies of Suzanne, the Food Edltion

I hate olives, but love olive oil. (tonight's pizza crust wound not taste right with any other oil) I love peas, can't stand pea soup. I love cooked pudding but think that instant tastes grainy. I can be full from a good meal, but the smell of freshly baked goods is enough to make me eat when I don't want to. I hate meatloaf, but like meatballs. I eat Navy Breakfast (english muffin, corned beef hash and baked beans, stacked) but find eggs gross. I don't like Pepsi, but loved Diet Pepsi. Love Coke, but couldn't stand Diet Coke. (Point is moot-can't consume the diet beverages unless I want a raging migraine, aura and all, in about 5 seconds.) Love Snickers, like Milky Way, but the Three Musketeers will get pawned off to the first sucker person I see. Don't like ketchup, but if I get a whopper junior without it, it doesn't taste right. (1. Can't eat a whole Whopper. 2. Don't get the urge for them very often, much to the kids dismay) I like to d...

But I Don't Know Anyone Named Ike

So, we should be okay, right? This thing is a Cat 3 already! It's going to really suck no matter where this storm makes landfall.

Holy Catfish, Batman!

Check this out: ELKIN, N.C. - David Hayes' granddaughter just asked him to hold her Barbie rod and reel while she went to the bathroom. He did. And seconds later he landed the state record channel catfish at 21 pounds, 1 ounce. ADVERTISEMENT Alyssa's father had bought the pink Barbie fishing rod for Christmas and she had caught a few bluegill before her grandfather hauled in the catfish. The Winston-Salem Journal reported the catch Aug. 5 in eastern Wilkes County has been certified as a record by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Hayes and his granddaughter have been fishing in the pond behind his house since she was big enough to hold a pole. Hayes said his granddaughter worried he would break her rod. He landed the 21-pound fish on a 6-pound test line. It was 32 inches long, 2 inches longer than the rod.

Does the Hurricane Theory Still Apply?

Fay made landfall in Florida. So far, she's been fairly quiet in these parts-kind of like the friend and coworker of years ago. Since I *did* have a friend named Faye, does this count? Do I need to warn the rest of Florida of the storms named after friends and family? Maybe I should. In that case, we should worry about these: 2008 Nana (we called my grandmother Nana, but it wasn't her given name-does that count?) 2009 Bill (my stepdad) If we include Ed's relatives in the mix, then Fred will come visit Peter (my brother and we're seriously screwed on that one, folks) Theresa (aka Legacy, though her given name is Therese-again, we're fucked) 2010 Lisa (a former friend, but she'll probably end up like Fay) Paula (we're IMing right now, I have to tell her we can't be friends anymore! LOL) Walter (aka Socrates, but that one will loop around aimlessly) 2011 We are safe, because middle names have never been a factor. I'll be sure not to befriend anyone...

I Want To Know...

how Facebook can put up in "People You May Know" the matron of honor of someone I do know. We have nothing else in common, she is not friends with anyone who IS a Facebook friend. I've never sent an email to her, so trolling my email address book doesn't wash here. No, I'm not in contact with the person who's wedding she was in, either. Weird how they came up with her. Small world, eh?

The Monster of Montauk

Image
There are many legends of the weird on the Island that is Long. For years, my peers would joke about the three headed babies that would occur if Shoreham nuclear facility ever went online. Later, as my abilities to travel further occurred and a few family trips to the North Fork transpired, stories more fanciful and outrageous were heard. That ferry over to Plum Island ? Did you know they do genetic experiments over there? I heard that at least a half dozen times in trips to Riverhead, Greenport and Montauk. My thinking was that because access to the island was restricted, overactive imaginations made the place out to be more than it really was. Years later, a favorite author, also from Long Island, fueled the mystery of Plum Island with a book of the same name. Last week, news of a monster washing up on the shores of Montauk (on the map above, the furthest east of the lower 'fork'. Plum Island is that small island to the east of the upper 'fork'.) It hasn'...

Weird Dream

There must be a run of weird dreams. ShannyMar had one the other day that she recounted. Mine was just weird: Ed and I are walking into a cocktail hour, dressed up. It apparently is a reunion for my high school. (the last one I attended was my 10 year, if there was a 25, it'd be next year) It is being held at one of the fancier hotels on Long Island. We're mixing and mingling, but the consistent thing is that no one believes I am me. My answer was "Yes, I cut my hair off!" (it's been shoulder length or longer since I was 12.) At one point, the president of the choir 'tests' me by asking questions to prove I was who I said I was. Questions like "Mr. Thayer had us rehearse this song for the choral festival, but we did what other song instead?" He finally believes me. While I'm in conversation with him and another choir member, I notice the room emptying , and I assume it's to go into the ballroom for the dinner. However, Ed and ...

Jim Carrey Saves Me

Image
I'm in a funk about how crappy I've been doing at work. I didn't want to post a whiny post, so I've been procrastinating. Jim Carrey to the rescue! I saw this picture: It reminded me of the late, great, "In Living Color" and his recurring sketches as Vera DeMilo! I'll say one thing: his taste in swimsuits has improved over the past 20 years!
